St. Bernard's Catholic Church
Past, Present and Future
For St. Bernard's Catholic Church, KBS developed an elegant solution to a complex problem: How do you plan for future growth on the current budget, while retaining the touchstones of a century-old history? KBS Constructors joined with St. Bernard Parish and Schwerdt Design to collaboratively design and build an awe-inspiring new sanctuary that incorporates the touchstones of the original church and can be easily adapted for future expansion.
The Past
KBS coordinated the relocation of fourteen stained glass windows, the crucifix, the Stations of the Cross, and other items to the new church.
Although the transition required careful planning — 100-year old windows don't fit easily into modern materials — these elements are now the
highlights of the church.
The Present
KBS's own carpenters displayed their fine craftsmanship in the altar area, which featured a stile
and rail panel system. The altar railings were constructed of walnut. Stair nosings and trims were also
milled from hardwood.
The Future
Expansion can be easily accommodated with clever design. Gables were placed on the North and South side of the building to allow for future expansion which could double seating in the sanctuary.
With century-old stained glass windows, modern amenities, and a design that plans for future growth, St. Bernard's Catholic Church is an elegant blend of its rich history, vibrant community and bright future.
